Salt Mining

According to estimates, the Khewra Salt Mine has up to 600 million tonnes of salt. During Dr. Warth’s tenure, the mine produced around 187,000 tonnes per year, but by the twenty-first century, with the introduction of modern equipment and mining processes, that figure had risen to around 385,000 tonnes per year. Don’t worry, supplies won’t run out very soon: the Khewra Salt Mine, which has already expanded to 19 floors, is predicted to continue producing salt for the next 350 years. Himalayan rock salt is also mined using the chamber and pillar method, which involves extracting only half of the salt and allowing the other half to support what lies above. In Pakistan, rock salt is mined at Khewra, Kalabagh, Warcha, Quaidabad, Jatta, and Karak. The salt produced in these locations is 98 percent pure and has vibrant orange, pink, and red colors.

Salt is produced in two ways: by mining it from underground salt mines (solid salt) or by evaporating salt water. The Khewra mine has been extracting and trading salt since the 13th century, but large-scale mining began in 1872 when British engineer Dr. H. Warth constructed the main tunnel. Warth constructed storage buildings and fortified old digs by excavating. equipment and a consistent water supply. The improvements to the Khewra mine infrastructure were so successful that officials were forced to levy fines for salt smuggling.
