History Of Himalayan Salt

Discovery of Himalayan Rock Salt dates back to the days of Alexander the Great in 326 B.C. The licking of mountainous surface by the horses of Alexander the Great, who fought battle with Raja Porus on the bank of river Jhelum about 35-40 km away from Khewra led to the discovery of Rock Salt deposits at Khewra, that is a huge and one of the richest Salt fields in the World. Himalayan salt gets extracted from the Khewra Salt Mine in Pakistan, near the Himalayas. It is one of the largest and oldest salt mines to be found in the world. The salt that can be harvested from this mine has apparently been formed from the evaporation of large bodies of water in ancient times. It is believed that Himalayan salt is composed of remnants of the primal, original sea, as it comes from salt mines located more than 5000 feet deep below the Himalayan Mountain range. It has, therefore, experienced tremendous pressure over hundreds and thousands of years and is said to be extremely pure. It is much more natural than table salt, as it has been minimally processed and hand-extracted, which makes it free of additives and also an unrefined product. It is also mostly comprised of sodium chloride, but because of the natural harvesting process, it also contains many other trace elements and minerals that are not included in regular table salt. It is estimated that it contains up to 84 different trace elements and minerals. It is these minerals and especially iron which gives it its pink color.

Origin & Deposits

There are many different types of salt deposits, each with its age and geology. When the metallic element sodium and the gaseous element chlorine combine, sodium chloride (the chemical name for salt) results. The mesmerizing pink and white crystals of Himalayan salt have been dissolved in the water of ancient oceans since Alexander the Great’s time. The armies of Alexander the Great discovered Himalayan rock salt in this region (now Pakistan), but formal Mining began in the 1200s by the Janjua people. These events took place near the Khewra salt mines in Pakistan, which is now home to the Himalayan Mountains.

Purest Salt

In Pakistan, rock salt is mined mostly in the Khewra, Warcha, and Kalabagh regions. The salt was preserved from pollution by being buried under snow, ice, and rock. Miners discovered a clean, mineral-rich salt that was colored a vivid pink due to its high iron content when the mine was first discovered thousands of years later. This is why Himalayan pink salt is now one of the healthiest natural salts known to man. It’s the best rock salt, with sodium chloride levels ranging from 96 to 99 percent and other trace elements like calcium, iron, zinc, magnesium, and others at safe levels of less than 1%. The color of salt can range from white to pink or reddish. Himalayan pink salt is said to have been given the name “white gold” by alchemists who realized its true worth. ‘King Salt’ or ‘Salt of Life’ are other names for this salt. This salt is hand-mined in the Khewra Salt Mines to maintain its purity, and it is free of any additives or preservatives found in regular table salt.
